IMS re-route of outbound messages through Praetor

To set up IMS such that Praetor filters all Internet-bound messages using the outbound rules, you need to modify IMS settings on the Connections tab page and cause it to route the outbound messages to Praetor.  Use the Exchange Admin program and select to administer the Internet Mail Service connector. Once you are presented with the properties for IMS, choose the Connections tab and the following will be displayed.

Exchange Admin IMS Connect page

Within the Message Delivery group box, do not select the Use domain name system (DNS) button as this will cause IMS to bypass Praetor and send out the messages directly to the receiving host.  Instead, choose to  Forward all messages to host  and enter the IP address of the machine running Praetor.  If Praetor is on the same machine as IMS, enter the local IP address for itself in your private local subnetwork, not the exposed IP address on the Internet.

Note:

Do not use the generic self-routing IP address of 127.0.0.1.  Using this as your IP address entry will cause Praetor to inaccurately interpret the direction of the message flow.  This 127.0.0.1 may also cause confusion with message relay attempts that Praetor will block.

It is imperative that the IP address you enter here is the same as that found in the Local Domains list.  If these IP addresses do not match, Praetor will mistake all outbound email as incoming messages.

With this change in setting, IMS will forward all outbound messages to Praetor.
